The dropshipping playbook.

Dropshipping works. But most stores fail in the first 90 days because the operator either picks the wrong niche, burns ad budget before validating, or drowns in manual work. This guide covers what actually matters at each stage.

The five steps

From zero to your first shipped order.

01

Niche selection

What to do

Pick a product category with genuine demand, defensible margins, and a supplier that can fulfill reliably. The wrong niche costs you months. Look for: physical products with AOV between $30–$120, repeat purchase potential, and a defined audience that spends online.

Common mistake

Picking a niche because you like it, not because the economics work. Passion projects make bad dropshipping businesses. Validate with real purchase intent data, not search volume alone.

How Autofli handles it

The Research Agent evaluates niches against HiveMind data — what AOVs are holding, what return rates look like, which supplier categories have reliable stock depth — before recommending a direction.

02

Product sourcing

What to do

Find products with real supplier backing: verifiable CJ or Spocket listings with actual inventory, real lead times, and acceptable margins after platform fees. Every product needs a cost you can build a 40–60% margin on.

Common mistake

Importing 500 products from AliExpress based on star ratings. Volume does not equal quality. Deep catalogs with bad products destroy conversion rates and inflate returns.

How Autofli handles it

The Sourcing Agent evaluates products against margin floors before they enter your catalog. No product goes live with a supplier cost that does not support a viable retail price.

03

Brand setup

What to do

Build a brand that looks deliberate, not assembled. Name, visual identity, store design, and product presentation should feel cohesive. Customers compare you to every store they have seen — yours needs to read as trustworthy at first glance.

Common mistake

Using the default theme, a generic logo, and supplier-copy product descriptions. These stores get dismissed before the customer reads a single line. Trust is established visually before it is established with words.

How Autofli handles it

The Brand Agent generates a full identity: name, color system, type pairing, logo, and tone. The Storefront Agent builds a premium design. Content agents write product listings in your brand voice.

04

Marketing

What to do

Start with one channel. Meta ads or Google Shopping — not both at once. Set a test budget of $15–30/day, run 3–5 ad variations, and let data accumulate before scaling. Email from day one: capture, abandon cart, post-purchase sequence.

Common mistake

Spreading budget across five channels with $5/day each. You get no statistically meaningful data on anything. Concentrated spend on one channel gives you real signal.

How Autofli handles it

The Ad Optimizer Agent manages Meta and Google bids, pauses underperformers, and shifts budget toward what is converting. The Email Agent runs acquisition, abandon cart, and retention sequences automatically.

05

Fulfillment

What to do

Orders must be placed with suppliers within 24 hours and tracked through to delivery. Customer support expectations are set by Amazon — anything slower than 3 business days feels slow. Build a clear returns process before you need it.

Common mistake

Manual order forwarding from a Shopify notification email to a supplier account. This breaks at scale and breaks on weekends. Automated fulfillment is not optional past 10 orders/day.

How Autofli handles it

The Fulfillment Agent places orders automatically via the CJ API within minutes of purchase. Tracking is synced back. Iris handles support tickets and return requests without your involvement.

The numbers

What the margin model actually looks like.

A typical dropshipping product at $60 retail. These are illustrative ranges — your numbers will differ based on niche, supplier, and ad channel.

Retail price

What the customer pays

$60.00

Supplier cost (CJ)

Typical landed cost including shipping

− $18.00

Payment processing (Stripe)

2.9% + $0.30 per transaction

− $2.04

Platform fee (Autofli)

$99/mo Growth plan ÷ ~30 orders

− $3.27

Ad spend per order (ROAS 3×)

At $60 retail, ROAS 3× = $20 ad cost

− $20.00

Net margin per order

~28% net — before returns and refunds

$16.69

Returns typically run 3–8% in well-managed stores. Factor a 5% return rate and net margin drops to roughly 22–24%. The goal is to hold above 20% net — below that, ad budget volatility makes profitability unstable.
